A weekly newsletter from Durham
Little stories of kindness, gratitude and good news — gathered from postcards tucked into book stands around the city, and sent to your inbox once a week.
The idea
We cut a pocket from an old pair of jeans and stitched it inside a little book cupboard down by the river. Inside are blank postcards and a simple invitation: tell us about a moment of hope.
A kind neighbour. A small bit of good news. Something that made your week, or something you're thankful for. No moment is too small.
Each week we gather the postcards, read every one, and write up a handful of stories to send out to everyone who's signed up.
It's a small way of noticing the good that's already happening across Durham — and passing it on.
Look for our book stands in the parks and along the river. Scan the QR code, or just reach into the pocket.
Jot down your moment of hope and pop it back in the pocket. Add your name and corner of Durham if you'd like.
Sign up and we'll send a few of the week's stories to your inbox, every week.
From the pocket
Real moments, in the words of the people who sent them. (Examples to start — yours will go here soon.)
A man at the bus stop on North Road waited with me in the rain and shared his umbrella the whole way to the cathedral. We talked about nothing in particular. I never got his name.
My daughter learned to ride her bike along the river path this week. A whole crowd of strangers cheered when she finally let go of my hand.
Someone left a bunch of daffodils and a note on our doorstep after a hard month. No name, just "thinking of you." I've been smiling about it for days.
The little free library had the exact book my granddad wanted to read again before his memory goes. Someone, somewhere, put it there for us.

Share something hopeful, sign up for the weekly email, or both. We read every postcard.
We'll read it this week — keep an eye on your inbox for the next newsletter.
